Shiwei Zhu, Ph.D.
Principal Investigator
Jianhao Cao, Ph.D.
Postdoctoral fellow
Jianhao entered the cryoEM field in 2008. He was trained under Liman Zhang, working on solving the inflammasome structure at OHSU in 2020. He joined my lab in March, 2024. Now, he is fascinated by cryoET techniques and is actively dedicating himself to both cryoET and innate immunity research. His hobbies are exploring the neighborhood and photography with his phone camera.
Qiuye Li, Ph.D.
Postdoctoral fellow
Qiuye graduated from Tsinghua University in 2013. He pursued a Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Witold at Case Western Reserve University and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2020. During his Ph.D., he used cryoEM to solve amyloid fibril structures and published several high-resolution structures in prestigious journals such as NSMB and NC.
Currently, he is learning the cryoET technique and exploring in situ structural studies of amyloid fibrils using cryoET. Additionally, Qiuye has a strong interest in the development of cryoET methods.
Megan Gibas, Bachelor
Volunteer Student
Megan is interested in how cryoET works and is exploring its applications. She is curious about both the research and educational aspects of cryoET and would like to pursue further Ph.D. studies in the future.

Postdoctoral Candidates
We are looking for highly-motivated postdoctoral fellows to study the host-pathogen interaction in the cellular context by using cutting-edge cryo-ET with allied techniques, including cryo-FIB/SEM and cryo-CLEM.
Interested applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in one of the following fields: structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, and cell biology. Prior experience in structural biology research is not required. To inquire, please email Dr. Zhu ( shiwei.zhu@case.edu ) with a cover letter describing your research interest, a recent CV, and the contact information of 2 academic referees.
Graduate Students
For graduate students interested in joining the lab, please look at our Biomedical Sciences Training Program at CWRU School of Medicine. Please submit application material that indicates that your priority program interest is the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and Shiwei Zhu is the potential thesis advisor.
Visiting Scholars/Students
Please briefly describe your academic background and research interests to Dr. Zhu ( shiwei.zhu@case.edu ).
